I was amazed to discover that my memory of them had not deceived me and they were gems worth rereading. One has been the rereading of several books I read before I was 20. My cup runs over with gratitude to them.Ī couple of themes emerge as I look over the list. Of course, my beloved husband has faithfully read books to me for over 40 years. ![]() I have had the unprecedented (in my life at least) blessing of having several friends volunteer to read books to me that I would otherwise not have access to, one coming to my house one afternoon a week, others e-mailing recorded files. I used to feel reading was an indulgence, but have grown to believe it is life sustaining, not only bringing pleasure, but nourishing my mind and spirit with ideas, insights, and wisdom for living. I have read fabulous books this year, nearly every one outstanding. The constants of family, church community, friends, writing and reading are the unbreakable threads that have woven the days and months tightly together. Life has brought great moments, merrymaking, and heartbreaks in turn. All the major milestones of life, the three great celebrations as Thomas Lynch puts it, have occurred this past year: a wedding of a daughter, the birth of a grandchild, and death of a sister. It seems just a month ago I was posting my 2014 reading list. ![]()

Occasionally Galen reminisces about his time in the war, but he doesn’t go into graphic detail. Of the two bishop characters, one is evil and manipulative while the other is a good and strong man. The story seems to be set in a vaguely Catholic society, though that aspect of the setting doesn’t play a huge part in the plot. ![]() One character makes an ambiguous decision that is left to the reader to judge. The hero, heroine, and those on their side are all good people with the right motives, and their enemies are undeniably evil. The morality in this story is, for the most part, well-defined. The twelve royal sisters of Westfalin want for nothing that their father can provide - so why, then, are their lives overshadowed by a nameless curse that no amount of determined princes can break? Worse, why does each prince meet death shortly after his failure.and will the same fate befall the curious and goodhearted ex-soldier Galen? Duma Key is related to much of King’s earlier work. One of the factors that makes this book interesting to King readers is that it pulls together various strands from the author’s literary canon - not to mention that of the late Richard Bachman.
