5/21/2023 0 Comments The woman inwhite![]() ![]() ![]() Marian’s actions are done with good intentions, to free her sister from false imprisonment, rather than for personal gain, which is why her law-breaking is positioned as virtuous rather than immoral. For instance, Marian breaks the law to free Laura from the asylum, where she has been unjustly imprisoned by Count Fosco under the identity of Anne Catherick. Instead, they actively strive to do what’s morally right, even if they must break the law in the process. Meanwhile, if one commits a crime with malicious intent-like Count Fosco and Sir Percival do, on several accounts-those crimes are not only worthy of punishment but actually bring about their own punishment.Īlthough the virtuous characters are rewarded for their behavior, they are not passively virtuous throughout the action of the plot. Collins uses Walter and Marian to highlight how one can break the law while still being good and virtuous-what matters most is the intention underpinning the crime, and if one’s intentions are good, then they aren’t worthy of punishment. The characters in The Woman in White are morally nuanced, however, and “good” characters are often willing to commit immoral or illegal acts if they are necessary to protect their loved ones, while “bad” characters sidestep punishment for long periods of time. ![]() Justice is self-regulating in The Woman in White, as the characters who commit crimes are fittingly punished, while the virtuous characters receive suitable rewards in exchange for their efforts. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments A scot in the dark![]() It's the perfect plan, until Lily declares she'll only marry for love.and the Scot finds that there is one thing in England he likes far too much. Brown![]() ![]() ![]() “Paul always wants to push the buttons at the edges of things,” reflects Brown. There are arms plunged into boiling vats, the Inquisition torturing naked women, burning of heretics, plague and snakes being beaded galore, with the camera lingering on a good-looking Jesus on the crucifix as his loin cloth is removed. And, at 83, he has delivered much the same recipe in Benedetta. ![]() Verhoeven made his name in Hollywood with films such as RoboCop (1987), Basic Instinct (1992) and Showgirls (1995) by giving his audiences plenty of violence and erotica. “I went into the project as a consultant on the film with my eyes open realising that historians don’t have the copyright on history.” “Because it was Paul Verhoeven, I knew from the start that there would be quite a bit more sex in the film than if I were making it,” American academic Judith C Brown cheerfully reflects of Benedetta, the veteran Dutch director’s big-screen version of her celebrated book Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Not to be mistaken for just a "how-to-do-it," this voluminously illustrated volume (like the classic Disney films themselves) is intended for everyone to enjoy.īesides relating the painstaking trial-and-error development of Disney's character animation technology, this book irresistibly charms us with almost an overabundance of the original historic drawings used in creating some of the best-loved characters in American culture: Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, Snow White and Bambi (among many, many others) as well as early sketches used in developing memorable sequences from classic features such as Fantasia and Pinocchio.
